At a Glance:

Industry:

Shipping, Logistics, and Transportation

Location:

Antwerp, Belgium

Challenge:

The primary application is based on a central database containing information about all containers and a combination of many smaller programs. Performance issues could have a serious impact on the charging and discharging of cargo from the vessels, trains and trucks.

Solution:

TruView™ Appliance

Result:

With TruView™, the IT team was able to have an independent view of overall performance which led to faster problem isolation and troubleshooting, and lessened the risk of service impacting performance related issues.

Overview

MSC Home Terminal located in Antwerp, Belgium, is one of Europe's busiest container terminals. Many of the MSC container carriers delivering products into or out of the European continent use this terminal for charging and discharging containers. The employment amounts to about 1,200 direct jobs (800 dockworkers and another 300 administration and technical staff). The terminal has a good turnover and an annual capacity of 4.8M TEU (Twenty feet Equivalent Unit or 20-feet container).

Currently, MSC Home Terminal ties together two data centers, six physical distribution locations and 130 access switches with a traditional three layer model (core, distribution and access layer). The Terminal Operation Systems (TOS) is the most important application used on a 24/7 basis and is needed to charge and discharge containers on vessels, rails, trucks and on the yards.

Managing the requirements for the TOS application is extremely difficult because it is made up of different components ranging from aspects like desktops, cameras for number plate recognition and container damage, badge readers and thin clients, just to name a few, said Tamara Lievens, ICT Infrastructure Manager for MSC Home Terminal. Adding to the complexity, the applications are Windows and iSeries and many of the components are supported by external parties and companies.

Historically, every time there was a problem, the network was the first to blame, but with the complex application and different support organizations, pinpointing the actual cause of any particular problem was labor intensive and time consuming, added Lievens. Visual's solution provides us with an independent view across the entire application, so we were able to quickly pinpoint the problem area and fix it instead of wasting time going back and forth between departments.

MSC Home Terminal has implemented the TruView™ appliance across the port to manage overall service quality, improve visibility and reduce the time to troubleshoot performance issues.

Proactive Views and Improved Troubleshooting

Managing and troubleshooting IT, application and network-related problems was growing in complexity and increased the amount of time needed. The infrastructure had become more complex with a larger network, combination of wired and wireless operational clients, iSeries and Wintel environments and the data coming from external sources including electronic data interchange (EDI).

We have a great team with a lot of experience, but like many organizations, we have a separation of knowledge between the network and server teams, said Lievens. While each team tended focus on their respective areas, one of our goals was reducing the finger-pointing between the network and application groups. In addition, we needed visibility to reduce the conflict between different internal departments.

One of our biggest challenges is the lack of detail when we receive complaints like 'the network/application is slow, added Lievens. Instead of chasing problems after the fact, our team wanted to deliver more proactive information to first line support to better handle any performance issues.

MSC Home Terminal had deployed numerous management tools across the organization. The tools tended to break down into two categories: vendor-supplied tools that focused on a single component and reactive performance management tools for aspects like red-light/green light or packet analysis.

Independent Visibility and Verification

Even though the different departments had different tools they used, it often caused more finger-pointing because they had a narrow focus and individual views instead of seeing the application as a whole, said Lievens. TruView has been a great addition because it is completely independent and has no preferences across an entire application flow. The solution pinpoints where the problem is so we know where to focus our resources.

Before we deployed the TruView, we lacked an independent overview tool which led to longer times to identify and pinpoint the culprit, concluded Lievens. "But once we deployed the solution, the amount of time and man days needed to find and solve problems were greatly reduced. Instead of focusing on a single area, we now had a complete view of performance across the entire application and network. This helped us find problems faster, regardless of where they were occurring.

Supporting 24x7 Requirements with Internal and External IT Support

Our dockworkers and support team do an incredible job charging and discharging cargo with intense time constraints by leveraging automation and real-time updates, said Lievens. But if there is a performance-related issue with the TOS application, it can cause a huge disruption because all of the sudden, the automated process may not work and the team has to go to back-up manual processes. Cargo will continue moving but at a much slower pace and the risk increases because the delays cause a ripple effect.

When there is a problem or slowdown, it's hard to catch up even when the application is back on line and working properly, concluded Lievens. TruView has greatly reduced both the risk of performance related issues as well as shortened the time to identify, isolate and resolve the critical problems. The visibility allows us to focus on the right area much faster and that is the key to our business success.

The Power of Business Intelligence with Overall Visibility

After looking at our current environment and future requirements, we determined we needed the best-of-breed monitoring tool for end-to-end performance – including client to server as well as OSI layer 1 through 7, said Lievens. We evaluated many other tools and vendors and it can be difficult because each system has its own way of doing things – but once we did our due diligence, the power of Visual's solution stood alone.

Since we have different departments and requirements, it was a major benefit that the solution sits inline and we didn't have to install clients across the entire network and you don't impact switches, servers or devices, stated Lievens. Other vendors tried to sell us on the value of robot clients or simulators, but it was critical to measure the actual traffic and more importantly, what the end-users are experiencing when it occurs instead of guessing with synthetic traffic measurements.

Improving Today and Planning for Tomorrow with TruView

Like every successful organization, MSC Home Terminal focuses on the needs for today's requirements, but also has an eye on the future for what will be needed.

When we looked at the market leaders in the space, we determined that Visual not only had the best product for monitoring end-to-end performance, but its road map showed the organization is going in the right direction, said Lievens.

The system has become our go to monitoring tool for analysis in cases of performance issues, where it's often difficult to prove and pinpoint the cause, concluded Lievens. By using the system, we win a lot of time in troubleshooting and we have vendor independent reports which make it more efficient in resolving problems. We now have more confidence in our overall IT monitoring and IT management capability.
